Ryan Blaney’s stellar performance in the postseason solidified his status as a deserving NASCAR Cup Series champion. Despite facing challenges during the summer, Blaney’s outstanding performance over the final six races of the season ultimately secured his victory.
The champion was running the Ford No.12 car representing ‘Team Penske’. It is Blaney’s first-ever NASCAR Cup trophy while Team Penske stood as the champion for the fourth time, second consecutive year.
Blaney’s journey to the 2023 Cup Series title was marked by determination and resilience. At Phoenix, he clinched the championship with a second-place finish, trailing Ross Chastain but leading fellow contenders Kyle Larson and William Byron. Notably, since 2014, every Cup Series champion has also won the final race in NASCAR’s playoff finale.
For Blaney, it was his third consecutive second-place finish at Phoenix, accompanied by a remarkable streak of five consecutive top-five finishes.
However, the intensity of the race couldn’t be denied. Blaney’s quest for victory was evident as he fiercely pursued Chastain for the lead, with Larson and Byron trailing. Blaney voiced his frustration at Chastain’s aggressive blocking, even resorting to physical contact in an attempt to overtake him.
The race pushed Blaney’s composure to its limits, especially when a caution flag was raised after Kyle Busch‘s spin, leading to a sixth-place restart position. Blaney’s mental preparation and focus paid off as he swiftly passed Byron and then Larson, regaining the lead with just 20 laps to go.
Blaney emphasized the importance of self-awareness and self-improvement, acknowledging his weaknesses and working to address them. He reflected on his personal growth, stating, “You have to be smarter during races. You have got to think about the bigger picture. It’s not only about being fast, you have to evolve yourself to be a more well-rounded racer.“
Blaney’s journey to the championship was marked by ups and downs. After a strong start with a win at the Coca-Cola 600, he faced a challenging summer with multiple finishes outside the top 30. Heading into the postseason, he didn’t initially appear to be a title contender. Nevertheless, he defied expectations by securing wins in the second and third playoff rounds and consistently finishing in the top two in four of the final six races.
In the end, Blaney’s resilience and determination throughout the postseason made him a deserving NASCAR Cup Series champion. His victory at Talladega served as a turning point for his team, igniting their momentum and setting the stage for their triumphant playoff run.
