According to BBC, At least 50 people have died and dozens went missing in floods caused by heavy rains in central Afghanistan. Authorities in Ghor Province have confirmed that several people are missing. The floods have destroyed approximately 2,000 houses.
In Firozkoh city, around thousands of shops are submerged, and most access roads have been cut off. An Afghani described the flood as “Horrible”. The province’s Disaster Management Department has declared emergency in the city and rescue operations have been started to shift the locals to a save place.
According to Taliban Government, over 300 people died last week due to unusually heavy rains that devastated numerous villages in the north. The flooding has left much farmland buried under thick mud in a country where 80% of the population, over 40 million people, rely on agriculture. UN agencies have warned that the death toll from the latest floods may rise as rescue efforts are hindered by lack of access to affected areas.
